A distinguished group of human rights experts from the United Nations has urged the international community to acknowledge gender apartheid as a crime against humanity. The group has identified and documented instances of gender apartheid in Afghanistan, attributing it to clear legal, political, social, and cultural factors. They view the legal status of women in Afghanistan as a crisis.
Moreover, the extensive efforts of several esteemed international institutions to formulate a comprehensive legal document that includes gender discrimination in the list of crimes against humanity are praiseworthy. These endeavours have elevated the level of legal scrutiny over actions that violate human rights, contributing to the improvement of the human rights situation worldwide, particularly in Afghanistan.
HRD+ fully stands with this timely proposal and the invaluable message from UN experts. It calls upon states, international institutions, and influential figures to pay special attention to this appalling human rights violation and take decisive steps to recognize it as a crime against humanity.
The recognition of gender apartheid will hold its perpetrators accountable under the international law and deter them from committing further crimes against women and girls.
HRD+ invites all civil society, media, think-tanks, academic institutions, and individuals to participate in this valuable campaign and advocate for the recognition of gender apartheid.
We believe acknowledging gender apartheid as a crime against humanity will have substantial international repercussions. It will prompt governments and global structures to regard human rights principles as a fundamental prerequisite in their interactions with Afghanistan’s de facto administration, paving the way for the enhancement of women’s rights.
In the hope of upholding the human dignity of all citizens without any discrimination.
